East Coast Low hits Kirra

The East Coast low that was off NSW smashed beaches along the NSW coastline causing huge beach erosion a massive surf, some of the biggest waves seen in years. The swell was predicted to hit the Gold Coast Wednesday afternoon. So I was keen to get down to cooly to see how it was, it was forcasted to be 5ft on the points, since it was a South swell we were not going to get the main bulk of the swell but 5 – 6ft is plenty for the Gold Coast to do its thing.

At 2:30 I had a look at the Snapper Rocks surf cam and it was still looking pretty small. I headed down anyway, Snapper wasn’t very big when I got there but with in about 20 min a few big sets rolled through and just kept getting bigger, Im not very good with guessing how big waves are but they looked a solid 6 ft+.

Snapper wasn’t handling it to good due to the low tide, after a while I thought I would check out Kirra, there wasn’t much time left to shoot at is was after 4 and the sun sets before 5 these days.

Im glad I did go down to Kirra as it was pumping, pretty much from greenmount through to Kirra was pumping. Kirra had some pretty amazing waves come through and there was some sizey sets as well.

So all up the waves were probably only good for a few hours, as heaps of surfers were still surfing while it was dark. I went down this morning hoping it would be pumping but it was all over, Dbah had some waves but the banks didn’t look to good.

For one of my shots from Kirra I have had heaps of people sharing it and liking it on Facebook, it has been pretty amazing, but I see some people think it is photo shopped, I guess I can understand why they might think that if they are not a photographer. But none of the photos are photo shopped and the image I am talking about was shot with a slow shutter speed, this is not an easy shot to get right and takes practice but if done properly it can create a smooth dreamy look, shooting like this has actually become my favourite way to shoot surf photos over the last couple of years.

My Canon 5d mk 3 come in handy due to its high ISO performance as I kept shooting after the sun had set.

Hope you enjoy the photos and thanks again to all the people who commented, liked and shared my photos, much appreciated!!!!!!

The Perfect Wave

The swell from the East Coast Low that smashed the NSW coast line yesterday finely arrived on the Gold Coast late in the afternoon, It wasn’t as big as down south but much cleaner, Kirra was a solid 6 foot on the sets and I saw some of the best waves I have seen at Kirra. ┬áThis wave in the photo was a bomb and probably the best looking wave I have seen at Kirra, it was after the sun had set and the light was fading fast so the slow shutter speed shot was the best option.

I have had a lot of print requests for this print so I have made it limited edition to 100 Prints. If you want a Signed Limited Edition Print Click here
